What should I actually look for in dedicated server hosting in Germany?

Connectivity to important exchanges in the region, how the provider complies with GDPR, and how reliable the power grid is. Having an address in Germany doesn't make any of those guaranteed by default.

Why does Frankfurt's DE-CIX matter for latency across Europe?

DE-CIX Frankfurt is one of the biggest internet exchanges in the world, connecting a large number of different networks. A server located in DE-CIX will have lower latency across Europe compared to a server not located there.

According to the Wikipedia article on DE-CIX, "DE-CIX Frankfurt is one of the largest Internet exchanges in the world" with "throughput of 19.6 terabits per second," and "more than 4,600 network operators (carriers), ISPs, content providers, corporate networks and other organizations from more than 100 countries were connected to DE-CIX" as of August 2026 — numbers that shape a shorter path to the rest of Europe.

What does GDPR mean for data hosted on a German dedicated server?

No matter the server location, GDPR calls for certain technical and organizational measures to be implemented to protect personal data. Simply hosting in Germany doesn't release you from these obligations.

As the Wikipedia article on the GDPR explains, controllers must ensure "appropriate technical and organizational measures" protect personal data, and implement mechanisms to make sure that "personal data is not processed unless necessary for each specific purpose" — requirements to follow the data rather than simply the server location.

Does hosting in Germany help with GDPR data residency requirements?

Yes, but only partially. GDPR prohibits transfer of EU personal data to countries outside of EEA without additional safeguards. Keeping data on the server located in Germany eliminates this particular requirement.

As the same article on GDPR notes, GDPR "forbids the transfer of the personal data of EU data subjects to countries outside of the EEA — known as third countries — unless appropriate safeguards are imposed" — while hosting on a server located in Germany will eliminate this particular challenge, it won't affect other requirements listed above.

How reliable is Germany's power grid for hosting infrastructure?

Very, by global standards. In 2023, interruptions of electricity supply in Germany totaled 12.8 minutes per subscriber, while renewables made up the majority of Germany's electricity mix.

According to the Wikipedia article on the electricity sector in Germany, the electricity grid in Germany had "0.213 h (12.8 min) interruption per subscriber per year (2023)," and the share of renewable energy in Germany's electricity mix was "62.7% (2024)" — statistics worth remembering, although uptime of the dedicated server will depend on the data center's own power backup, not just the power grid.
